Rabbit health alert: change in calicivirus vaccination protocol

We would like to update you on the latest information regarding calicivirus in rabbits.

In March 2017 a new variant of rabbit calicivirus was released to control the wild rabbit population. Unfortunately, this variant is not selective and is likely to also affect domestic rabbits kept as pets.

Initial studies suggest that the currently available Cylap Vaccine is likely to protect rabbits again this new variant.

The Australian Veterinary Association and special-interest rabbit veterinarians are recommending that all adult rabbits are now vaccinated for calicivirus using the Cylap Vaccine every SIX MONTHS to provide better protection against the virus. Please note that at this stage, the Cylap Vaccine is officially approved for twelve monthly use.

If it has been six months or more since your rabbit has last had a vaccination, we recommend that you make an appointment to see one of our veterinarians.
